I’m not sure if folks were aware or not, but I wanted to share a little back story and update about Wes Huffstetler and his wife. On August 26, 2021, Maria Huffstetler woke up feeling excruciating pain in her chest. As Wes began trying to assess her, she began feeling numbness in her extremities. She was immediately rushed to Gaston Memorial Hospital, where she was later transferred to Atrium Main in Charlotte. After a battery of tests and many hours/days of anxiously not knowing why or what exactly happened, it was confirmed that Maria had suffered from a blood clot that settled onto her spinal cord (spinal stroke) causing paralysis from the neck down. Since August 27, 2021, Wes has since been spending every day by Maria’s side in the hospital splitting time with his parents and in-laws in the evenings while he goes home to be with his three kids all who are under the age of nine. Maria has undergone multiple surgical procedures but continues to face a long road of life changing rehabilitation.
The Huffstetler’s face a difficult transition to the next phase of care, whether at home or in a rehabilitation facility. Members of RC 81, Sta. 8 and Batt 01-A companies have contributed small donations to help the family with groceries, fuel, and other immediate needs. Efforts are in place to fully take advantage of benefits offered to CFD members during hardships, and while these resources offer relief, the reality is their lives will be impacted for years to come. Please continue to keep Maria, Wes and their children in your thoughts and prayers. He is grateful for those who have reached out via text and phone calls sending their prayers.
A fellow soldier from Wes’ Army National Guard unit created a GoFundMe page that is continuing to receive generous donations for the family. Please take a moment to open the link and consider whether to contribute or to share it with as many people as you can.
